Can you make money with Commission Junction? Like most affiliate programs it depend on the theme or niche of your web site, and how well you match your content and the CJ programs.

Our spider ran through the site recently, and I've made a list of the major categories and their average Earnings Per Click (EPC). You will recall that EPC is calculated by taking the total commission payout for the advertiser and dividing it by the number of clicks that advertiser gets, so EPC measures how profitable each click is for the publisher. We used 7 day EPC, which measures EPC across the last seven days.

The spider also only saves the top ten advertisers in each category/subcategory, and since some advertisers are in more than one category/subcategory it tends to skew the results a bit (higher). We came up with an average of .56 (fifty-six cents) per click across the board averaging every category and subcategory.

We've created a metric we call True EPC or TEPC, which measures the actual Earnings Per Single Click, rather than the earnings per hundred clicks that companies like CJ use to make the numbers look bigger.

What does it all mean? Well, to me it means that if you have a website that gets visitors interested in Loans, Insurance, Sunsetter awnings or Yahoo hosting, you should be a member of Commission Junction.

More generally, if you think you can get decent clickthrough on Finance, Home & Garden, Insurance or Web Services, I would include some Commission Junction ads.

Some commentary on the top 4 ads: what strikes me right off the bat is that the little Yahoo text ad at #4 pulls almost four bucks. I actually signed up for that program myself, and I'm going to put it on this site when I get the chance. My calculations tell me that 1:5 to 1:7 clicks results in a signup.

What's the flip side of all this data? There are categories that aren't so great at CJ. If your site is about web services advice, handbags, new age, car travel or rentals, commercial insurance or weddings, I'd look elsewhere. Another way to interpret the data would be to say that the marketers CJ has for those categories don't pull well. Still another would be that the type of sites that sign with CJ just don't attract the type of people that would click on ads in those categories. No matter how you slice it it still comes out the same — it seems like CJ isn't the place to look to fill that ad space.

Not content with my mountain of data, I opened the firehose a little more. I ran a program that compared the average EPC for Pay-per-sale programs vs. Pay-Per-Lead programs. For per-sale, the EPC was .36. For per-lead it was .67. Intutitively I would say that advertisers pay more for sales than leads, so the clickthrough on leads has to be much higher on CJ, which also seems correct since less of a commitment is required from the visitor for a lead than a sale. So if you have a choice in programs between sale and lead, take the lead program.

So what did we learn here? It seems to me that if your site visitors would respond to banners or text links about mortgage financing, insurance, gardening or web services, add some CJ banners to the mix. What the heck, add them anyway if you have room, because experimentation is important to success in affiliate marketing. If you have a site with content that fits those categories or is a general interest or entertainment site, there are many good programs to choose from at CJ.

Lastly, I did a quick comparison of the average Adsense payout (using 80% of the average of keyword bids for different categories), and Adsense comes out a better EPC about a quarter of the time. So check Adsense first before you put up a CJ ad that has an EPC of a dollar or more. A big banner ad vs. an Adsense ad may seem like a good idea because more exposure may translate into more clicks, but you can fit three Adsense text ads in that banner space.

So it is looking like I might be leaving Venezuela soon and I am starting to wonder what I am going to do for money when I get back.  I spent a ton to come down here and now most of it has disappeared as I paid my credit card bills with bank accounts that had no money coming in.  I won't need too much immediately as I will be going to law school and getting financial aid.  However I am eventually going to need some cash. 

During law school it is hard to find a job that will be flexible enough to understand a law students schedule; one that will let you move around you hours based on classes and exams.  So I was thinking about it and wondering if I could find a data entry job part time.  You know one that will pay me for the work I get done and I can do it at my pace. Ideally they could give me a certain amount of work for a week and I could just do it that week when I get a chance, but as long as I did it I would get paid. 
There have to be data entry lobs like this out there.  Okay so they probably don't pay as well as the other more steady ones but they would still pay.  If these types of data entry jobs prove impossible to find maybe I will simply do what all my friends threatened to do when college got to tough; stuff envelopes or fill out online surveys.  Hey I am going to be a poor struggling law student, I am not to proud to stuff envelopes, I will just have to invest in a lot of bandaids.

And then I awake, and realise that reality is somewhat different. Most software projects start in mushroom mode, with no one knowing what has really been sold, or alternatively what shifting market is being addressed. It is rare to include the customer in early deliberations (if at all) because inevitably the salesman has sold the organisation as being 'market leader' or 'best of breed'. It would be difficult to turn around and say to the customer 'excuse me but how do you do this particular activity', or 'I don't know how this works'.

Thus the Thames barrier is raised between the customer (including the end user) and the software supplier, and a game is played out with the developers screaming for detail, and the legal beagles parrying each other. Perhaps without this facade no one would ever win a contract, but I would personally prefer to work with someone who is honest about their limitations, and who will work with you to arrive at the best possible solution to the problem.

All products evolve, no one ever gets it right first time, but we pretend we do. Whilst I agree that it takes a fair amount of trust between software developer and customer it is surely better to work together to get through the cycle of evolution than to build a glass wall which we fight over.

The customer does need to have some veto over what is happening, since (heaven forbid) there are those who will milk such situations for what they are worth, but if the product is going in the right direction, you will surely get a better outcome.

The warning bells should instantly go off in your head when this wonderful girl, who has been so supportive and has listened patiently while you pour your heart out, now needs your help.  If you're a man, the protective instincts are triggered.  If the person on the other end of the instant message is male, and you're a woman, you immediately want to rush to his aid.

This is the same Nigerian scam, but instead of hooking you with avarice, it hooks you with love and compassion for someone you have already formed a relationship with.

That, my friend, is why instant messaging is far more dangerous to the victim of a scammer than email ever was. 

IF YOU CAN'T GET MONEY, GET INFORMATION

It's a rare instance when the IM scammer will try the Nigerian scam on you.  Most of the time they will try to get information from you.

"I would love to call you, what's your telephone number?"

 "What's your last name? "(Assuming you've already told them your first name.)

"I need to set up my own web site, could I use your credit card?"

They probably won't be dumb enough to ask you for your mother's maiden name, social security number, or bank information.  At least not yet.  Not until they really think they "have" you.

BEWARE IF...

1. The person is too romantic, too endearing, too flattering too early.

2. The person won't furnish a picture of themselves, or if they only have one.

3. The pictures they do provide look like they were taken by a professional photographer.  A real person normally won't have professional pictures in their profile.

4. They have no profile.  They claim to be an American but speak broken English.

5. They give you a "sob" story.  The drama is meant to elicit compassion which leads to your wallet.

6.  They ask for money, credit cards, or any information about you beyond your first name.  Most legitimate chatters won't even ask for that.

7. They have a sudden crisis for which they need money.  They have an automobile accident and have no insurance.  A sudden illness and no money.  This usually comes later in the game after they think they have you "hooked".

8. They want to set up a cam, but when you set it up, you can't make out their face. Note: they want to see you, but they don't want you to see them.

9. They get annoyed when you engage in idle chit chat.

10. They can't answer detailed questions about themselves.  For example, they claim to be a student, but they have trouble telling you what their major is and what their favorite class is and why they like it.

11. They can't describe the city or location they say they are from.  Do a little internet research on the place they claim to live in.  Ask them detailed questions about it.

12. If they give you an age, ask them something specific that someone in that age bracket would know (or not know).

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE

Instant messaging can be a lot of fun, and you can meet people from all over the planet you would never have known in real life.  You can meet a special someone you might be happy with for the rest of your life.

It's a vast ocean full of many different kinds of fish, but just like the ocean it's got some sharks and barracudas in it.  The sharks will make themselves known before they strike, if you know what to look for, and how to avoid them.

While it's hard to make comparisons due to the sheer amount of free and paid themes out there, it's still a good idea to have a test blog site. Test any theme you plan on using, and make sure your test blog is also fitted with all the plugins and miscellaneous widgets used on your real blog. The last thing you want is for your readers start seeing weird error messages on your blog.

At the end of the day, a theme is just a theme. Instead of spending your time installing them, it may be wiser to outsource the task and focus more on your readers.
